Goal Setting 101
(article by Cathy Sykora)

In preparing for my holiday challenge, a review of good goal setting practice was in order.  I love New Years because I like lists, assessing and making a plan.  I like success with goals even more.  It seems like the more clarity and conviction you have the better chance you have of succeeding.
Everything I learned about goal setting was from Anthony Robbins.  My son used to get nervous because he said he could tell I was in a challenging time or situation because I would pull out Anthony Robbins.  It is true,  Tony could always get me to take steps forward that I wouldn't have done on my own.
Before even setting the goal, you should take several steps to be sure that you have clarity and you are striving for goals that are really important to you.  If you are confused or misguided on your goals, it is harder to stick with your plan.   Tony Robbins says that there are 7 steps to setting goals:
1.  Clarity
You must get clear on where you were and where you are.
2.  Certainty
Once you get clear on where you are, you must get certain that you can attain this goal.
3.  Excitement
After figuring out where you are and that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, you need to decide where you want to be.
4.  Focus
Out of your list of goals, circle the top 3 or 4 you would like to achieve during the holidays.  Which of those goals would inspire you to take action?
5. Commitment
Take each of your 3 or 4 goals and decide why you MUST achieve them.  What are some of the things you don’t want to do that you will have to if you want to achieve them.
6.  Momentum
Resolve to do one small and one large thing immediately to move toward reaching your goals.
7.  Get SMART
One popular guideline for setting goals is the SMART method.  The more often you measure yourself and hold yourself accountable, the stronger your results.

·         S – Specific (or Significant).
·         M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
·         A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
·         R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
·         T – Time-bound (or Trackable).

Now, I am ready to set my goals for the holidays!  I hope this helps you too.

Key Tips to Ensuring You Get the Best Pet & House Sitter

10 Keys to Getting the Best Pet & House Sitter

1.       Ask Open Ended questions versus Yes/No answer questions.

2.       Get References and Call on them – again ask open ended questions.

3.       Don’t look for the cheapest; you may just get what you pay for.  Ask about activities and time that you get for the per visit rate.

4.       Research ahead of time, places like Angie’s List, the BBB and on line Reviews.

5.       Research their accreditation's, certifications, education and training.

6.       Let the Potential service provider do most of the talking to really find out what they know, how they do business, and what they will do for you.

7.       Pay Attention to their interaction with your pets, the questions they ask you about routine, favorite toys and play activities, routine, age, supplements, medications & their attention to detail and discussion points about other potential issues that might arise.

8.       Pay attention if they taking notes, asking key questions, ensuring they have every little detail and possible situation covered.

9.       If possible, when you have someone new, ask a neighbor to watch the amount of time a pet sitter is at your home and compare it to what time they promised in for each visit.

10.   If you have a nanny camera, use it.

If Your Pets Could Speak

If Your Pets Could Speak
By Patricia Pantazis Hunnybun

Seeing Things from the Perspective of Your Pets -

Humans spend a lot of time socializing and networking with other people.  They love to engage with others who make them feel valued and important.  They treat themselves to the best, such as; picking their favorite styles and tastes when they chose clothing, vehicles, homes and even the foods they eat.  People want to be engaged with one another, have lots of fun activities and feel that they fit in, belong, and are valued.  People love to get lots of positive attention and interaction through others.

We, companion animals, are limited to fully engaging in our natural environment or with others of our own species.  We rely entirely on you and your time you make available to me.  I am entirely at your schedule and your tastes in how much time you spend with me, what you provide for me, and how much fun and interaction I get with others of my own species or with you.

When you are busy or have to leave town, I am lonely, scared and I miss you.  I am apprehensive, nervous and stressed at the change in my routine and environment.

When you have to leave, can you please provide me with an attentive, caring, dedicated care giver that will engage with me, play with me, treat me the way you do when you are home.  Can they give me more of their time and not just run in and out to feed me and make sure that I have water.  I am already stressed and miss you.  I need lots of love and attention, fun and playtime, engagement when you are away to make me feel important and valued.  I really need a care giver that understands that my normal routine, safety, security and well being is the most important thing to me; because I am already stressed with being away from you.

What I love in a pet sitter is someone who will talk to me, play with me, engage with me and understand that I am missing you and stressed.  Someone who will touch me, pet me, groom me to help ease my nervousness and anxiety.  I need someone who isn’t distracted by anything else and is paying complete attention to me while they are with me.  I need to trust them and feel completely comfortable with them.  I truly will appreciate someone who realizes that time is more important to me than anything else.  Please don’t look for the cheapest price when looking for someone to take care of me.  I hope that I am worth more to you than that.  You spend a lot of money on the really important things to you, please look for someone who will give me everything I need when I am away from you and will give me dedicated time and attention just like you do when you are home.

When you interview a potential pet sitter for me, please ask them how much time they will spend with me.  What types of activities will they do with me?  Ask for proof of what they tell you.  Look for someone who is experienced, trusted, and reliable and also has training and education in working with animals.  I prefer an experienced adult who will be able to identify any subtle change in my behavior or physical condition to recognize something is wrong and are capable of dealing with it.  I prefer someone who won’t be on their cell phone or device texting or playing games, listening to music instead of paying attention to me.  I prefer someone who is capable of ensuring that my manners and obedience are consistent with your expectations and who can teach me things if I am still young and learning.  And, I really appreciate someone who understands my natural instincts and behaviors and will engage with me as if they were my owner or best friend and spend time playing with me to help me not feel stressed that you are away.

What Differentiates Pet & House Sitters and Me?

Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. Horse, Home and Other Pet Sitting, Training, Walking, Basic Grooming.

Personal Assistant services including Organizing, Decluttering, Packing, Errands, Logistics Planning, Motivation, Business Consulting.

My Husband and I also do some Remodeling, Home Repair, Computer Clean Up, and Photo Editing

I am a Certified Health and Life Coach
Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.
A. Client with Horses, Dogs, a young puppy, and Chickens. One of the things I loved the most about this job was working with her puppy with basic manners and obedience, and also learned a few new things about egg colors. The best part was working with a barley grass grower. I never admit to knowing everything, that is impossible and I love it when I have clients who can teach me.

I have a new client who has a silky hen in the house. Poor thing is nearly blind and too fragile to be out with the others. She is adorable and cuddles! Cutest thing ever!

I work with special needs animals as well, and one of my clients horses is diabetic and insulin resistant. Has a history of laminitis and foundering. I was able to provide more information and suggestions to them and directed them to learn more about Natural Balance founder Gene Ovnicek.

My newest life and health coaching client recently told me that because of me, she is now picking up her brushes again. She is an artist who has taken a break for several years and now is back, feeling inspired and motivated. She said I am her muse!
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Always ask for references and call on them.

Ask open ended questions and probing questions versus yes or no type of questions.

Be wary of Testimonials because there is no way to prove that an actual client wrote them.

Don't shop around for the best price, but for the best value and exceptional quality and work ethic of services.

Always ask how much time does the per visit rate give. You may find a lower rate, but will that only give you a 15-20 minute visit?

My per rate visits are 45-50 minutes or longer. I limit my services to only 3 clients per day so that I can dedicate my undivided attention to each of these clients and their loved pets and animals. Reducing stress on an animal is critical when the owners are away and my belief is the only way you do that, is keeping the normal routine and giving each animal special time and attention.

Always have a neighbor or friend contact and someone who can just watch how often and how long a new pet sitter is really at your home.

Always do a phone interview first, then meet for the first time in a public place and if comfortable to move forward, then do a home visit consultation. Reliable and professional pet sitters will not have an issue with this.

First time, first job a Pet Sitter may ask for payment up front just to ensure payment and trust. Afterwards, payment would typically be after the job is completed.

When hiring a Personal Assistant or Coach be sure it is with someone that has similar values and personality as you do. Rapport is everything when hiring a personal assistant and health, life coach!
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Many qualified and skilled pet sitters have fewer testimonials because satisfied customers tend not to post compliments, versus dissatisfied clients will post complaints.

Most pet sitters per visit rate only give you 10-20 minute visits. Be sure to always ask how much time that per rate visit gives you.

Many home and pet owners have installed Nanny camera's to see how long a pet sitter stays and how they interact with your pets and while in your home. If you don't have a Nanny camera, use a neighbor to keep an eye out and verify that you are truly getting what you pay for.

If you pets seem stressed or have had any destructive or behavioral issues while a pet sitter was watching them, it is very likely it is a result of lack of engagement, exercise or play time. Many pet sitters say they will walk and exercise your pets - just be sure that they truly are.

Make sure you feel a good rapport and comfortable with your pet sitters personality, and that they prove a good interaction and rapport with your pets during the in home interview visit. Women tend to have more instinctual tendencies and better rapport with animals due to animal imprinting instincts with the mom in nature. I am not stating that there are not good male pet sitters, but the industry as a whole has more woman pet sitters in part, due to this innate natural instincts and abilities.

Many pet sitters establish a 'business' years later, but their experience could be many many years before. For example, I was born and raised with animals all of my life, I started training and pet sitting for family and friends since 1991, and didn't establish my business until 2008. So always asking more probing questions into a pet sitters history of their experience and pets that they have owned themselves is a good practice.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I have a lifetime of experience with animals and business. I treat my work like a business with the highest standards of excellence, honesty, integrity and work ethic. I treat your home and valuables as if they were my own, and you and your furbabies like family!

My priority is to serve, this is my passion and it is my full time career. I will be here tomorrow, 5 years from now, 20 years from now!

I am a local resident and business, reputable, qualified, certified and am active in my community, associations member and continually attend seminars, training and on going learning to always stay up to current and new advances.

I strive to be the best in what I do, I always exceed expectations, and work ethic, integrity and honesty are my highest priorities.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. Sadly, many initial phone calls the potential customer asks "what do you charge" and sometimes that is it. This is truly sad because a per visit rate can be 10 minutes or 50 minutes depending on the pet sitter. What you get for your per visit rate also varies significantly among pet sitters.

Pet's are like our children for pet owners who truly love and cherish their 'kids' - I would prefer that a potential customer ask about rate or price/cost after interviewing and asking other key questions first.

I always try to educate a potential client about what differentiates me from my competitors and before answering the 'cost' question, I ask the client how much interaction, play and exercise time are you wanting for your pet? It is easier for me to give a price if a client just wants the rush in and out and basics, and cheap cost or if they want more dedicated time and attention for their pets.

I have basic, standard and premium rates. I take no more than 3 clients per day to ensure that I am giving the time I promise, the quality and engagement asked, and exceptional service which many times includes lots of extra's without extra charge.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. My goal is to build a rapport and relationship bond with my clients and pets that I care for. I do not only stop by to feed and check water or clean, I stay and play, engage and interact with all animals. I take time for grooming, exercise and play. While doing so, pets and people for that matter, sometimes do or say the cutest things! I have too many stories to pick a favorite!
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I was raised with farm animals and domestic pets my entire life. I have been dubbed as a 'whisperer' by many. I not only understand animal behavior, but I can connect and read animals. I study and understand principles of pack or herd behaviors and instinctual fight or flight conditions. I have owned and loved my own animals and pets my entire adult life. I started out by 'helping' out friends and family, working with them on training their new horses, cats and puppies. I am known as the litter box trainer who teaches cats to potty in the toilet! I left a corporate life to pursue my dreams and passion and that is to work with animals and help others to alleviate stress and worry in their lives. I took certification courses and formal training to ensure that my knowledge level exceeded just being a pet owner. I wake up every morning excited to go to work. I treat my work like a business in my integrity, work ethic, dedication, commitment to excellence, and responsibility. I treat my clients, homes, family, and pets as if they were my own and like family. Even if I help just 1 person, it is all worth it.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. I am a certified Dog Trainer
I am certified in Advanced First Aid
I am a certified Life and Health Coach
I am an association member to many organizations.

You can view all of my experience and credentials on my home page at my web site pamperedpetsandpeople.com
Q. What is your greatest strength?
A. I ALWAYS exceed people's expectations and go above an beyond what is asked. I am the type of person that I don't just walk by something that needs to be done, I take care of it, clean it, fix it even if it something that I won't charge for. I believe in complete customer satisfaction and always doing the right thing regardless of policy or payment. Always! My 14 years of Corporate Customer Service experience has taught me that.
Q. What are you currently working on improving?
A. I am always working on additional credentials, certifications, training and joining association memberships to keep my credentials current, and always stay active within my community and industry. I strive for excellence and am always learning. I never claim to know everything about everything, but what I do not know, I will research, study and learn!

Don't Go Cheap With Your Pets Health and Safety - You Will Often Get What You Pay For

Being a pet sitter may seem like an easy job for quick money and many people go into pet sitting with this frame of mind.  Many pet owners also have this same frame of mind, thinking it is an easy job and then look for someone cheap.Which is usually someone inexperienced or in this only temporarily.

What most pet owners don't realize is that when you deal with your own pets day in and day out, because they are yours, that instinctively and by routine you naturally do many physical and visual checks, you already understand your pets character, habits and demeanor, and you have established a bond, trust, respect and much more with your own pet that a pet sitter will not have.  Therefore it requires more skill and experience for a pet sitter to truly and expertly take care of your pets to keep them well and safe.

There are many problems with the fly by night, part time, or inexperienced type of pet sitter and the above  frame of thinking.  The risk to your pets or home is immeasurable and the stress it can create to you and your pets is avoidable if you research just a little deeper initially.

Fly by the night pet sitters sometimes lack the experience, quality, work ethic, dependability and level of responsibility that a more qualified and experienced pet sitter has.   They might need to make some extra cash for a temporary period of time.

Here is how you risk your valuable time and your home and pets safety.  You take the time to meet with them, teach them the ropes, establish a rapport with them, introduce them to your pets and show them around your home.  You feel that you have established trust for them to be in your home with your valuables.  Your pets have also started to establish a bond with them.  Depending on how often you need a pet sitter, you may use them a few times and then suddenly one day down the road you call them and they have moved on from their temporary cash making job and are no longer doing pet sitting.  Now, you have to go through the process all over again.  This causes you a lot of stress as well as your pets.

The following are difficult realities to be discussing, but I have heard many stories of the fly by night or cheap pet sitters by my clients.  I have also experienced this myself when I have needed one for my vacations.

1.  Many of these types of pet sitters don't actually engage with or play with your pets.  They stop by feed them, check their water, clean up litter boxes or yards and then leave.  Qualified and experienced pet sitters should be giving you at the minimum 45-50 minute visits.  Many owners and my clients have put in Nanny camera's in their home and captured this as well as other horrendous situations.

2.  Giving access to your home is a risk you have to take seriously and ensure you are only going with a reputable, trustworthy, experienced pet sitter.  Too often I hear horror stories of how things went missing after having a young, part time, unqualified pet sitter in the home or that the owner noticed that private and personal areas were gone through.  Worst yet, although it is difficult to prove in these cases, shortly after having a new pet sitter leave the business a home owner is robbed and in once case with one of my clients, her dog was stolen.  Was it the pet sitter giving access or schedule information to a friend, boyfriend or someone else?

3.  Inexperienced pet sitters also can put your pets health and safety at risk.  I have clients who had pet sitters who allowed dogs off the leash thinking they knew the dog well enough and the dog ran off and got hit by a car.  Most pet sitters, even some of the experienced ones do not have any experience or training in reading animal behavior or animal training which is crucial in being able to determine that an animal will listen and obey commands.

4.   Inexperience can cause death to your pets.  If a pet sitter is inexperienced in truly being able to read animal behavior and be able to identify subtle signs of changes in an animals behavior, that a serious illness or stress related illnesses can go unidentified.  Some part time pet sitters only spend 5-10 minutes at the home doing the basics and do not take the time to fully inspect the animal visually and physically.  Things like noticing changes in an animals disposition, demeanor, ears, eyes, nose, temperature, energy level.  Being a pet owner or raised with pets does not always guarantee that a pet sitter has enough experience because many times it is the parents or a partner who was the primary caretaker to childhood pets.

I could go on about other situations that can occur with part time, fly by the night and cheap versus trusting a reputable, trustworthy, experienced, qualified and professional full time business that does pet or home sitting, but I won't.  If you can imagine it, it probably can happen and has happened to someone.

I would suggest the following to ensure that you are getting a great value, exceptional quality care as well as safe guarding your home and your pets to the best, not the cheapest. Because in most cases, you truly do get what you pay for and isn't your home and your pets well being worth the best?

1.  Always ask for references and call them.

2.  When interviewing the reference ask probing open ended questions and really pay attention to whether that person struggles to find the answers.  This might be an indicator that the person is a friend and not a true previous or existing client.  Ask questions like; How long have you known them, where did you find them, are you also a friend to them, how many times have they pet sat for you, when is the last time you used them etc.

2a.  A very interesting question you can also ask is; No one is perfect and leaving your pet with someone else can be difficult because sometimes pet sitters don't have the exact routine as you do. If you could change two things about how (person's name) is currently doing things versus your perfect vision of how things could be what would they be.

You could also phrase the question by asking, When (person's name) first started new with you, what types of questions did they have with the routine and what type of things did you have to remind them of or show them a time or two until they got it right.

This is a fantastic way to set the expectation for the person to answer something that they would change in the way your word the question.

3.  Unfortunately, you will likely find more bad reviews on someone than good ones.  A dissatisfied customer is more likely to complain 9 out of 10 times than a satisfied customer will write an on line compliment.  So, if you are hiring a business, google them and find out if there are any complaints.

4.  I have my doubts about places like Yelp or Angie's list because you can have some excellent service providers, small businesses, or qualified pet sitters out there and because all of their clients are very happy with them, and satisfied customers they tend not to take the time to do on line reviews.  You may miss out on a very qualified and exceptional pet or home sitter just because know one took the time to do an on line review for them.  The other issue with part time or fly by the night pet sitters, is they are not a legitimate business or have a business name, so you may not find anything when you google them.  That is another reason why I suggest sticking to a reputable established professional business who does pet and house sitting.

5.  When interviewing a potential pet sitter, ask open ended conversational questions versus yes and no questions.

Example:  Don't ask this.  When you pet sit do you stay 45 - 60 minutes each visit and while you are there do you play with the pet and do a physical check on the animal.

This is an easy answer question to just say 'yes' and tell you what you want to hear.  Instead try asking more probing questions.

Examples:
Your per visit rate, what does it all include?
On average, about how long does your visit take to complete all of those things?
What makes you stand out or different among other pet sitters?

Can you see the difference in asking an open ended questions such as the above?  What you will be listening for is what they don't say or what they say that everyone else does.  If this pet sitter does not state that they include 30 minutes of play time, exercise etc and they never mention doing a visual or physical check on the animal - it might be because when you asked them to list what they commonly do, and because they don't do it they don't think of it on their own.  If you ask them, do you do a visual check and offer play time every visit, then you have just given them the answer they know you want to hear and of course will tell you 'yes'.

6.  After feeling comfortable with a potential pet sitter by phone interview, then schedule an in person interview.  Often times, you get a different vibe from the person when meeting face to face.  If that went well then schedule a second interview at your home so you can see how the person interacts with your pets.

Watch for body language, nervousness, interaction and interest with your pets and eye contact.  To be safe, always meet in a public place the first time.  A true professional will have no issue with doing this as we understand safety and comfort is always the first consideration.  If anyone pressures you to meet at your home for the first interview and you are absolutely opposed to it, then that is a red flag.

When you have the in home interview, watch closely how the pet sitter interacts with your pets, pay attention to the details of the questions they ask, if they are thorough, and if they are taking notes.  A true professional pet sitter will be taking notes to ensure when they are doing the job, they do not just rely on their memory and they have everything down in writing.  A professional and skilled pet sitter should always ask you the following questions.  If they don't, you may need to consider the level of experience they have.

1.  Do you have a nearby neighbor that I can call with simple questions or that I can call in case of emergency that I can't make it.

2.  Who is your regular veterinarian and in case I can't get a hold of you, and there is an emergency do I have your permission to contact your vet.

3.  Do you want regular updates, texts or pictures while I am pet sitting?

4.  Are any of your pets on supplements or medications?

5.  Are there any issues or concerns you have with any of your pets that I should be paying attention to?

6.  What is your pets favorite activity, toy and treats?

Most of these questions show genuine interest of the pet sitter to reduce stress on the animal and for you, and shows that they have enough experience to consider everything.

I hope this article helps you next time when you have to leave your cherished and loved pets and valuable behind in ensuring that you have found only the best.

Happy vacations, business trips and spending quality time and relaxing.  When you pick the right professional pet sitter you truly can leave home and relax.
